The Proud Family Wiki

Detective Sunset Boulevardez is Felix Boulevardez's wife and LaCienega Boulevardez's mother. She and Trudy Proud are best friends, just like their husbands and (sometimes) their daughters. Just like Trudy, Sunset does not appreciate her husband doing something irresponsible. Sunset is an officer and stays physically active and practices (women's) self-defense classes which she once invited Trudy to attend with her to keep Oscar in check. Like her daughter, she too takes good looks very seriously. She also teaches her daughter to be polite to elders and respect authority.

She is voiced by Maria Canals-Barrera.

Appearance[]

Sunset is relatively tall and has brown hair and brown eyes. She wears golden triangular earrings with matching bracelets on her left wrist, a red sweater, tight maroon pants and red high heels. While on police duty, she is usually seen on a motorcycle wearing a blue and gold helmet with a badge in the middle as well as sunglasses, a tan jacket, burnt tan pants with a brown belt and black boots. In "Tiger Whisperer", her daughter is seen wearing this same uniform as Sunset takes her for a ride-along for 'Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day'.

History[]

Sunset Boulevardez was born in Queens, New York on September 30, 1951, being the youngest of two daughters. The following January, her family migrated west to Chicago. As teenagers, Sunset and her older sister Melrose grew up in a rough area and were involved in fights. After seeing her sister get jumped on, Sunset decided to bring peace to her community by aspiring to become a police officer.

As a young girl however, her favorite hobbies were cooking, dancing, martial arts, and of course, shopping! She enjoyed being outdoors and would climb trees and had dreams of becoming a gymnast, a dream that would be fulfilled by her daughter many decades later. Throughout the 60s, she participated in the sport, both in middle school and high school and reached the high school state tournament twice, failing to make the finals before quitting at the age of 17. Her sister was more athletically inclined to do gymnastics but took no interest in sports at the time. Sunset was a good student. While only getting straight A's once in her academic career, she consistently made the honor roll.

Despite the many challenges Sunset and her sister survived through and bonded over, the two had developed a toxic sibling rivalry that festered over decades and would carry over into the next generation. It largely stemmed from Melrose viewing Sunset as privileged her whole life due to circumstantial factors, such as their father returning home from Naval duties before Sunset was born and the fact that the family gradually elevated from poverty throughout Sunset's childhood. In 1966, Sunset graduated from elementary school and celebrated her quinceañera aboard a cruise ship in Lake Michigan later that year, making her big sister jealous. Two years later, she attended prom as a sophomore with her best friend since the first grade while Melrose didn't attend prom at all despite having a boyfriend.

In 1970, Sunset enrolled at Loyola University on the city's north side and graduated with a degree in sociology and criminal justice. She once aspired to attend medical school, however her sister talked her out of it, ironically citing their father's health issues leading to his retirement and therefore, a sharp decrease in income. Sunset ultimately decided to give back to her community and remain a cop. Her sister on the other hand moved to San Diego, California and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Melrose often bragged to her baby sister about the "lively Californian" atmosphere, where it was "always sunny!"

The first year on the job was a nightmare for Sunset. In 1974, she was involved in a shooting that left one of her colleagues dead and another unable to walk again. It was after this moment her attitude changed. To avenge them, she dedicated herself to getting as many weapons off the street as possible. She took martial arts classes became known for being a relatively rough cop after taking down an armed suspect on foot while being unarmed herself. It was a hectic year in Chicago and from that point forward, Sunset spent the remainder of her twenties "married to the job." After ten years on the job, she would meet her future husband Felix Boulevardez during a traffic stop. She learned Boulevardez, who was poor at the time was driving without a valid license and an unregistered vehicle. Strangely enough when Felix rolled down the window, it was "love at first sight". Instead of arresting him, she gave him the choice of "walking down the line or walking down the aisle" to which he chose the latter without question.

In 1986, Sunset left the force as she became pregnant with her first and only child LaCienega Boulevardez. This was a turbulent time in their marriage as Felix was struggling to get a loan to start a business and with Sunset now unemployed, not only was she unable to cosign, but now they had less income coming in and a baby on the way. Sunset's mother labeled Felix a "bum" and tried to coerce Sunset to leave him, but by doing that she felt it would be unfair to LaCienega if she wasn't able to grow up with a stable family structure. After agreeing to keep it together for LaCienega; Felix took up three jobs and LaCienega was born the following April. Sunset debated whether she wanted to go back and join the force, however, she felt she needed to be there for her daughter and returning to work would be a big risk.

In 1989, Felix proposed moving back to his home state of California. He informed Sunset that he promised his Papi that he would be there to take care of him once he got old. He also stated that it would be easier for him to get a loan in California than in Illinois and also Sunset would be able to return to her duties a cop. Chicago was becoming increasingly dangerous and Sunset didn't want to risk anything happening to herself before LaCi got a chance to grow up but Felix convinced her that work would be much easier because they would be moving to a smaller city with less crime and that they would have a babysitter in Papi. Despite Sunset's parents still being in Chicago at the time, Felix didn't get along with her mother and her father simply wasn't up to the task. It seemed like a win-win situation. However, Sunset was skeptical to leave Chicago as the original purpose of her becoming a cop was to "save" her community. But with LaCienega being in the mix, she had new priorities and she decided it was better to give LaCienega the opportunity to live a much easier life than the one she and her sister had to endure. Also, she could be closer to her sister, who constantly bragged about how great California was for so many years. Melrose ultimately convinced Sunset to come to California herself as she had a daughter of her own and suggested that their daughters could be "playmates" as neither of them had siblings. Sunset finally agreed to move and in 1990 they relocated to San Diego, where they would briefly stay with Melrose and her husband Mateo Avenúñez. LaCienega would meet her cousin LaBrea who she would develop a tumultuous relationship with while Sunset and Melrose would often clash, spawning telenovella-esque drama from time to time.

In December of 1990, Felix landed a job as an accountant in a strange town named Wizardville and the Boulevardez's would move promptly. Sunset returned to police work in 1991 to help pay rent and Felix invited his father to move in as promised. He would spend quality time babysitting LaCienega. Fortunately, Sunset got paid bigger paychecks than what she received in Chicago and Felix decided to try his hand at getting the loan to start Boulevardez Construction Company and with Sunset's increased income, they qualified. They moved again in May of 1994 and the following year, Felix quit his job to run the company full time. LaCienega was then enrolled into private school where she would spend four years. In 1997, Felix purchased an old mansion, located at 1430 Kelly Rd in Wizardville. The building had been abandoned for decades despite sitting in the middle of an affluent neighborhood. His initial plan was to flip the home and then sell, but after learning of its historical value and after seeing the job that was done on it, he decided it would be better if he moved his own family there.

Sunset's parents would eventually move to California in the midst of the decade, to be closer to their daughters.

In 2001, after an extensive remodeling project which involved changing nearly the entire layout of the home and the installation of a home theater, the Boulevardez's finally moved in. Upon moving in they would be greeted by and old lady who called herself Suga Mama who fell in love with Papi's smooth-talking ways. She invited the Boulevardez family over for dinner at their neighbors' house across the street where her son, Oscar Proud lived with his daughter Penny, wife Trudy and their twin babies BeBe and CeCe.

For the Boulevardez family, meeting the Prouds was like a "match made in heaven" except for LaCienega, who had met Penny at school earlier and was set up to compete for the last remaining spot on cheerleading squad at her new school, Willie T. Ribbs Middle School. Sunset on the other hand would instantly make friends with Trudy while her husband befriended Trudy's husband; however with the rift going on between her daughter and their daughter, she demanded LaCienega be on her best behavior so as not to embarrass the family.

In Louder and Prouder, Sunset has been promoted from street cop to detective and has been partnered with Maya's father, Barry Leibowitz-Jenkins where they go on undercover missions together and patrol the streets sharing the same police cruiser, initially making Felix jealous until it is revealed that Barry is gay and has a husband.
