"Snackland" is the fifth episode of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. It premiered on March 16, 2022, on Disney+.[1] This episode alongside "Get In" aired on Disney Channel on January 21, 2023.

Synopsis[]

Oscar opens a slap-dash theme park that, despite its poorly designed and extremely dangerous rides, becomes an overnight success. Penny struggles with her changing singing voice.

Plot[]

Snackland, Smithville's first food themed theme park is complete. It features slides with hot cheese instead of water, a gummy styled ferris wheel, a roller coaster, a stage for live performances and Mr. Chips as the official mascot. Suga Mama also notices a ride modeled after her, and, out of spite, forces Oscar onto the ride, which sends him and the teeth car straight into the center of the Earth.

Back at home, Oscar sets to work at manufacturing invitations for a group of distinguished visitors for an LPDZ reunion show at Snackland. Aided by Bebe and Cece, the three of them start arguing over a typo over Proud Snacks being misspelt as “Proud Sacks”. When Penny gets to school, she tells Uncle Bobby that LPDZ hasn’t performed in years, lacking a choreographer, costumes, music among others. Michael steps in to help and together they start practicing on a new song called “Cuter Than You”. However, all goes awry when they discover that Penny’s singing voice has turned masculine and deep (like Tone-Loc). When she returns home, she discovers that she can interact with her reflection, which speaks in her singing voice. The reflection tells Penny that she should be proud of her new voice and encourages Penny to use it with no problems whatsoever. Trudy also explains to Penny that she too went through the same situation.

Following a disastrous rehearsal, things start looking up for Oscar, who introduces his Suga Mama drop ride to a father and son, but, thanks to Bebe and Cece fiddling with the controls, the cart explodes upon impact to the ground, and the news winds up on a nightly broadcast hosted by Vanessa Vue. Oscar denies that he had anything to do with the accident despite the obvious proof, saying that Bebe and Cece were unable to operate the ride. Fearing that he will be sent to jail, or worse, suffer civil lawsuits, Oscar decides to close the park. After he and Mr. Chips fight over the Cheeto ears, the father and son return with a crowd of supporters, who are eager to riding Suga Mama’s Drop of Doom. Oscar then declares that the park is back in business and he receives a large sum of money from the supporters.

Oscar flourishes in his new success with Trudy questioning why people would come to a park where they can severely injure themselves. He even crowns himself as “king” with the additional title of Snack Master. After a series of accidents thanks to Bebe and Cece, this time from Oscar’s urging, Penny, who is also an employee, is met by her friends and Uncle Bobby, who inform her that she has been replaced by Maya. With the band now changed to LMDZ, Penny renounces her “former friends” and Oscar seeks an opportunity to rake in more cash. He also invited Lizzo to perform at the show. After Oscar orders security to have Suga Mama banished from the park, Penny takes her costumes back into the tent where she meets Lizzo again. She explains her problems in a rapid speech, but Lizzo tells her not give up on her dreams and be herself. A song and dance sequence follows suit with Lizzo helping Penny overcome her fears every step of the way.

One woman intent on crushing Oscar’s competition, is snackmaker Freddy Frito. The Frito-Snacks CEO has been appointed by the government to deliver a cease and desist notice to Oscar. She notes that Oscar stole her idea for a similar park called Frito-land, but he just laughs it off. A memory reveals that he did just that. When Oscar orders security to take her away, Frito swears that she will have him be called to testify in court. Lizzo also confronts Oscar over being paid $500 just to perform on stage. She does so anyway after her towering bodyguard Death Wish cowers Oscar into submission. LPDZ and Maya follow suit. Oscar refuses to let Penny sing, telling her that she’ll drive his park away, but Trudy pulls rank and orders Death Wish to squish him. He bounces away, shocked, defeated and wracked with disorientation. Penny sings, despite her Tone Loc-esque voice and the concert is a success. After Penny thanks the older idol, Lizzo, realizing that her $500 check bounced, goes off in search of Oscar with DW’s help. Her friends and uncle thank her and even LaCienega apologizes for her earlier behavior.

Trivia[]

  • Morals:
    • As Lizzo says, you don't need to be afraid to be yourself or give up on your dreams.
    • You can do anything you set your mind to.
  • The episode's premise is most likely a reference to the infamous Action Park in Vernon Township, New Jersey, which was known for having dangerous rides and a terrible upkeep.
  • BeBe and CeCe speak for the first time, though it is mostly baby babble that vaguely sounds like dialogue provided by subtitles for clarity.
    • Their full names are also revealed to be Benjamin and Cecilia Proud.
  • At one point, LaCienega refers to Penny as Kermit, and says that she should "go back to Sesame Street"; Kermit was a recurring character in that show for years, and even appeared in the pitch pilot alongside Rowlf the Dog, until The Muppets were acquired by Disney in 2004, afterwards only appearing in a 2009 episode and the 50th anniversary special.
  • When acting like a choreographer, Michael parodies Debbie Allen from the movie Fame.
  • The security guard is a play on the character Deebo, portrayed by Tommy Lister, Jr., from the 1995 and 2000 films Friday and Next Friday.
  • LPMDZ outfits in this episode are a reference to The Cheetah Girls outfits from the end of the first film.
  • A few people (Penny's friends, Trudy Proud, and Lizzo) said Penny's singing voice sound like Tone Lōc. Penny's singing voice is actually Tone Lōc.
