During Brother Kwame's history class, Penny arrives late for the fourth time in a row, which Kwame threatens to send her to detention for if it happens again. Having forgotten to write her own school report due to spending so much time with Kareem, Penny asks to copy Dijonay's report. Kwame points out her plagiarism out loud, which lands her in detention.

Penny tries convincing Kareem to stay, but Kareem insists on leaving due to his parent's strict oversight. Before Penny leaves, Wizard Kelly leaves her with an expensive bill.
Returning to her house, Penny finds that Trudy and Oscar have changed the locks on the doors due to Penny breaking curfew. Penny pleads for them to let her back in, even asking BeBe and CeCe for help, but they all refuse to let her in. Oscar secretly hands Penny money for a bus ride to Suga Mama's house before Trudy calls him back inside.
Penny arrives at Suga Mama's apartment where Suga Mama gets ready for bed. Penny lies and explains that she was locked out of the house. Suga Mama plays along at first until she reveals that Oscar called and explained the situation before Penny got there, and punishes Penny by telling her she can sleep in her father's old bed, a comically small and battered bed.

One morning, Suga Mama slips on a can and falls down a flight of stairs during her morning exercise with Penny, leaving her wheelchair-bound and in a [brace]. After taking her to the emergency room, Dr. Payne tells them Suga Mama is expected to get better in a month's time. Penny threatens Suga Mama that she will take care of her "the same way you took care of me, and my daddy", making Suga Mama fear for her life. However, Penny later tells Suga Mama that she was just messing with her and promises to take care of her properly, and the two bond as Suga Mama heals. Penny's family returns and are amazed at Penny's newfound initiative. Penny apologizes to Trudy for her behavior. Trudy explains that she used to be "even worse" when she was Penny's age. Suga Mama miraculously walks over to the doorway and watches from afar as the two make up and hug.
